So, these books always take you down the path of selecting, in the Add roles and features GUI, the 2nd radio button – ‘Remote Desktop Services installation’ – rather than the 1st – ‘Role-based or feature-based installation’. If you select the 2nd button, and the server isn’t joined to a Domain, you’re unable to go any further. If you select the 1st button, then there’s a ‘Remote Desktop Services’ option there, too.

I can only assume that this is there for non-domain installations of RDS i. I have a couple of questions here’s where I fully expose my amateur’s ignorance, if I haven’t already :. Install memory and 4 enterprise drives in Raid 10 or dual mirrors–your preference. Remote Web Access configured. All users with a physical box have access to it remotely per AD permissions. Now what about users that have no physical box connected to the server? Stack the desktops in server room, closet etc.

Benefit–they don’t need any special machine to access–their desktop, their laptop doesn’t matter–RWA solves the issue. Exchange –not an issue–I would never anymore put my “small” clients on their own Exchange server–Hosted is too cheap and reliable–Office will not perfect is actually pretty darn good.
