I’ll skip the story about how the general confusion around Foundation vs. Essentials features led me to buy Foundation, then worry that I should’ve bought Essentials instead, then conclude that maybe Foundation was best after all – even with the extra cost for RDS licences. They all assume that one’s server either is a DC, or is joined to a Domain. None of them consider the case where one is using the server within a workgroup with no DC, or that the target server itself is not a DC – although they also don’t mention that you can’t or shouldn’t?
So, these books always take you down the path of selecting, in the Add roles and features GUI, the 2nd radio button – ‘Remote Desktop Services installation’ – rather than the 1st – ‘Role-based or feature-based installation’. If you select the 2nd button, and the server isn’t joined to a Domain, you’re unable to go any further. If you select the 1st button, then there’s a ‘Remote Desktop Services’ option there, too.
I can only assume that this is there for non-domain installations of RDS i. I have a couple of questions here’s where I fully expose my amateur’s ignorance, if I haven’t already :. First: how remote is ‘remote’? I’m not clear on what ‘certificating’ capabilities the server already has. With RDS, she’d have to log into her domain account on the server itself, which provides a different desktop and apps.

Data could be numeric, text, photo or sound plus video. I have found that you can get access across the internet to a server but only provided with upload and download access of files. Remotely you do not have the Direct access that will give you the ability to access common data and keep the data up to data as you can locally.
You have the programs on your local PC as per the license. You would not want to download the program every time from the server. The programs are not designed for this. You don’t download programs from the server. You use RDgateway inside the server to get to remote desktops of workstations in the network. It doesn’t do that. It just has a web service that offers up to the logged in user the ability to remote INTO a supported pro version that supports remote desktop over a port connection.

At the moment the customer is having 3 users that can connect into a Windows Server via RDP configured as terminal server. As previously mentioned only two sessions are allowed. Does that mean after latest days I will be forced to add a Windows Server R2 standard? Install memory and 4 enterprise drives in Raid 10 or dual mirrors–your preference. Remote Web Access configured. All users with a physical box have access to it remotely per AD permissions. Now what about users that have no physical box connected to the server? Stack the desktops in server room, closet etc.
Benefit–they don’t need any special machine to access–their desktop, their laptop doesn’t matter–RWA solves the issue. Exchange –not an issue–I would never anymore put my “small” clients on their own Exchange server–Hosted is too cheap and reliable–Office will not perfect is actually pretty darn good.
